How to use dictionary

Definition :

A dictionary is a special book that gives a list of words of a certain language in an alphabetical order, explains what they mean, and provides a lot of other information about that word.

The use of dictionary: a dictionary is used to:    

  • To see the meaning of words.
  • To check spelling of words.
  • To learn pronunciation of words.
  • To break the words into syllables.
  • To see the label for noun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, pronoun, and interjection.
  • To learn the plural of nouns and tense of the verb.
  • To check a sentence or expression with the word used correctly.
  • To learn comparatives and superlatives of adjectives and adverbs.
  • To learn synonyms and antonyms of words.
  • To know the origin or history of a word.

How to use dictionary: we can find the words in dictionary with the help of Entry Words and Guide Words.

  • The Entry Words are the main words explained in the dictionary. They are in bold type font to make them easy to look up. In dictionary, words are arranged in alphabetical order of entry words from A-Z.
  • We also use Guide Words to find words in dictionary. Guide Words are found in top of each page in the dictionary.
  • The left page Guide Word is always the first Entry Word on that page.
  • The right page Guide Word is always the last Entry Word on that page.
